The story of Ms. Nua and her husband Mr. Sy
Ms. Nua and Mr. Sy, like many local Hue farmers, resides in Thanh Thuy Chanh for many generations. As the most rural area of Hue, they earn their living by doing many traditional farm work. While growing rice in their ancestor’s field, they plant vegetable garden and raise chicken and ducks to supply themselves.
With only that tradition, they are able to provide their two children to finish university. In many countryside villages in Hue, this considers a huge success for their family. Thus, Ms. Nua and her husband are really proud of this.
In recent years when the flock of tourists coming to Hue, the village with its famous Thanh Toan covered bridge receive a decent amount of visitors. With the most authentic hospitality, they open their beautiful garden to the public. Thus, nowadays, when you visit Thanh Toan village, you can come by her house to have the most unique Hue countryside experience.
What you can experience at Ms. Nua house?
Surprisingly, passing the entrance, we seem to go into the multi-colored garden of flowers and plants. A natural green space gave us the feeling of comfort and relaxation as living in the middle of nature.
Entering Ms. Nua house
Ms. Nua and her husband welcomed us and offered us cups of tea. After that, Ms. Nua started leading us to a big lotus lake and you will be amazed by the aroma of the lotus. She also taught us how to harvest lotus which is also the product she sells every morning at the market near Thanh Toan tile-roofed bridge.
One activity that we feel most thrilled is learning to use a traditional tool to scoop water into the field. Imagine in the old day, this is how Vietnamese farmers brought water to supply their field. We had some rollicking moments together.
What can you see in the garden?
Moving to the garden, we are impressed by the bamboo frame grown the gourds. Because it will make the house beautiful and in hot days, it will be an effective cooling solution. We also visited some nicely-grown beds of sweet potato, water morning glory and eggplants are planted under this frame.
Besides, we got to learn about wild betel leaf which is a kind of useful leaf using in cooking and healing.

We enjoyed the way she decorates her garden with an eye-catching flower frame.
Apart from visiting her organic farm, we also got to see the chicken, duck farm that isn’t far from her home. She raised a host of chickens and ducks because her house located in flooded areas, thus, this is a source of food for the family during the flood season.
Do you know it is also a source of dung to fertilize plants in the garden. From duck farm’s perspective, you can see the vast green field with the image of high flying storks appearing in front of my eyes. I could feel the taste of the countryside with the breeze blowing merge with the aroma of rice. How amazing it is! It’s the most wonderful sense I have never had before.
Continuing our Hue countryside tour, we returned Ms. Nua’s house. We ate green bean soup makes from her organic farm. The sweet taste of soup along with tranquil space here makes us feel more love for this Hue rural land. This is the most memorable experience for us.
